An Eastern Christian Prayer for Transition by Reader Maxim
O compassionate and merciful Lord, the only true physician of our souls and bodies, who casts down and lifts up, Who by Your very nature are ineffable, transcending all categories and definitions; Who honored the human being with Your image; Who wishes all humankind to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth, and Who surround Yourself with tens of thousands of angels, Cherubim and Seraphim, genderless by Your divine plan, existing to praise and glorify you in every place of Your Dominion; You alone exist eternally and without change.
Lord, God, Heavenly King, You are the Transforming One for those who transition, transform, and cross over. The presence of Your Holy Spirit fills all of creation. I was made to be a living icon of You, O Life Giver. You have given me a soul and filled it with Your Holy Spirit. You created it, You formed it, You breathed it into me. Created in Your image, my soul also transcends definition. I have many identities and loves, many genders and none. Grant that I may use the gifts You have bestowed upon me to illuminate the path to You for myself and others.
Master, with faith and in despair, Israel cried out to You from Egypt. You led Your people out of bondage, transforming them—a painful, yet redemptive, spiritual transition. You heard them fully and answered. O Lord, so too, hear the voice of my prayer when I call upon You. Liberate me from old restraints, release me from my own bondage, and grant me the freedom of congruence between my mind, soul and body. Fortify me with courage. Hear me, O Lord! Let my prayer arise like incense to you; the lifting up of my hands like an evening sacrifice.
Holy One, Yourself acquiring our infirm and impoverished blend of soul and body in Your saving dispensation, accept me at this time, as You accepted Peter the first Chief of the Apostles, formerly Simon the fisherman, to whom You gave the keys to the Kingdom of the Heavens; as You accepted Paul the Renown, formerly Saul of Tarsus, whom You showed to be the Herald of the Gospel by a revelation and a chosen vessel.
Send down Your heavenly grace upon me as I undergo the organic modification of gender, and bless the attending physicians and the means employed, for the biological alteration of nature is a wondrous work of Your all-powerful right hand and Your inscrutable will, and amazed by this new and astounding work, I confess Your grace, I herald Your mercy and, declaring Your magnificence, I glorify Your indescribable love for humanity.
Raise me speedily from the bed of recovery on which I [will] lie, and return me to my home and peaceful pursuits. Grant that the suffering of my body may avail for the purification of my soul and may lead me to return, in thanksgiving, to the works of my hands and to You, Christ Jesus, the Physician of soul and body.
Grace me in Your sanctification and make me worthy to keep my own bodily vessel without stain and blameless, likewise guarding the pledge of baptism inviolate and undefiled, and as a child of light, advancing in Your precepts and completing my remaining years, ascribing glory to You all the days of my life.
Through the prayers of Your All-pure Mother, the radiant Archangels, the Honourable Forerunner and Baptist John; the holy glorious illustrious Apostles, and all Your saints. Amen.
